The Chevrolet Blazer (1969–1991)
Before SUVs became crossovers, family haulers, and grocery-getters, the Chevrolet Blazer was basically a short-wheelbase truck with a roof on it.
And honestly, that’s a pretty good way to describe it.
From 1969 through 1991, the full-size Blazer stayed pretty true to its truck roots. It was body-on-frame, had solid axles, a truck drivetrain, and a straightforward 4×4 system. Obviously, things changed quite a bit over those 22 years, but underneath it all, the Blazer remained a truck.
Here’s how it all came together.
First Generation (1969–1972)
Chevy introduced the Blazer in 1969 as its answer to the Ford Bronco and International Scout. Rather than starting from scratch, Chevrolet took the K10 pickup chassis, shortened it, and built an SUV around it.
Pretty simple idea. And it worked.
One of the coolest things about the early Blazers was the removable top. You could take the whole thing off and essentially turn it into an open-air 4×4 for the summer, then put it back on when the weather turned nasty.
Power came from inline-sixes and small-block V8s, depending on how it was equipped. The suspension was leaf springs with solid axles front and rear.
There wasn’t much in the way of luxury, and that was kind of the point. These were basic, mechanical trucks that were built to be used.
That’s also a big part of the appeal today. There’s not a whole lot on one of these that you can’t understand, work on, or fix with a decent set of hand tools.
Second Generation (1973–1991) — The Squarebody
In 1973, Chevrolet redesigned its truck lineup, and the Blazer went along with it. This is the generation most people think of when they hear “K5 Blazer.”
The early trucks still had a completely removable top, but in 1976 Chevrolet changed to the half-cab design. You still had the option of running the back open, but the new design gave the truck a little more structure.
And underneath, it was still very much a truck.
Depending on the year and configuration, you could find:
- Solid front and rear axles
- Leaf-spring suspension
- Small-block V8s, including the 305 and 350
- Manual and automatic transmissions
- Gear-driven and later chain-driven transfer cases
Over the years, Chevrolet added more emissions equipment, creature comforts, and eventually fuel injection. But none of that really changed what the Blazer was underneath.
By the late ’80s and into 1991, you could get throttle-body fuel injection, overdrive transmissions, and a little more refinement than the early squarebodies had. But you were still climbing into a big, body-on-frame 4×4 with solid axles.
That’s what makes these trucks so interesting.
1991 was the last year of the squarebody-style K5 before Chevrolet moved on to the GMT400-based Blazer. The newer generation was more modern, more refined, and definitely more SUV-like.
But the old truck was gone.
Military Use — The M1009 CUCV
There’s also a pretty interesting military connection to the K5 platform.
During the 1980s, GM produced the M1009 CUCV (Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle) for the U.S. military. It was based on the K5 Blazer and was primarily used for transportation and light-duty utility work.
The M1009 came with a 6.2L Detroit Diesel V8 and a 24-volt electrical system. It wasn’t armored or particularly glamorous. It was basically a military version of an already pretty straightforward truck.
And that’s part of what makes them interesting.
The military wasn’t looking for something complicated. They needed something that could take some abuse, could be maintained in the field, and didn’t require a computer to figure out what was wrong with it.
A lot of these trucks eventually made their way into civilian hands as surplus vehicles. Plenty of them are still around today, whether they’re being restored, used as trail rigs, or just driven around because someone happened to find a good one.
Why the 1969–1991 Blazers Still Matter
What I like about the old Blazer is that there really isn’t much to it. It’s a truck. You’ve got a frame, solid axles, leaf springs, a transfer case, and a drivetrain that is pretty easy to understand. If something breaks, you can usually see what broke and figure out how to fix it.
That’s getting harder to find in newer vehicles. Everything has become more complicated, and while most of that technology makes a vehicle better in some way, it also puts more between you and the machine.
The K5 certainly has its downsides. It rides like an old truck, drinks fuel, and some of the GM components aren’t exactly known for being bulletproof. But those things are part of the package. It was never meant to be a luxury SUV. It was a truck that happened to have room for people and a removable roof.
That’s also why they’re still so popular. You can buy one, fix the things that need fixed, change the gearing, add lockers, swap in different tires, and build it into whatever you want without needing a laptop and a dozen modules to make everything work together. There’s a ton of aftermarket support, and there are still plenty of parts available.
That’s what I like about the squarebody K5 in particular. It has the proportions of a truck, the drivetrain of a truck, and the capability to actually use it like one. It’s not especially refined, and that’s kind of the point.
Chevrolet continued using the Blazer name after 1991, but the vehicle itself started moving in a different direction. The name stayed the same, but the basic formula that made the K5 what it was didn’t.
For me, that’s the appeal of the 1969–1991 Blazer. It’s one of the last periods where you could buy an SUV that was still, underneath everything, a pretty straightforward truck.
