I recently made a trip up to Dolly Sods to drive Forest Road 75, better known as the Road Across the Sky. I’ve driven plenty of back roads in West Virginia, but FR 75 is one of those roads where the scenery is really the main attraction.
The road crosses the high elevations of Dolly Sods, with plenty of gravel, rocks, forests and open areas along the way. I took my time driving it and stopped a few times to enjoy the views.
I also spent some time hiking in the Dolly Sods Wilderness. The landscape up there is pretty unique compared to most of West Virginia, with open fields, spruce forests, rocky areas and some great views.
After hiking, I headed to Red Creek Campground and set up camp for the night. It’s a primitive campground, but it’s a great spot to spend the night when you’re already exploring the area.
I also made a stop at Bear Rocks Preserve while I was there. The large exposed rocks and open views across the mountains make it one of my favorite spots in the area.
Overall, it was a great trip. FR 75, some hiking in Dolly Sods, camping at Red Creek and a stop at Bear Rocks made for a pretty full weekend. It’s definitely an area I plan on coming back to and exploring more.
